Christmas Tree Spikes are a popular choice for athletes competing in sprints, hurdles, middle distance and field events on synthetic tracks.

Christmas Tree Spikes are also known as Compression Tier Spikes and are designed to compress the synthetic track surface. The design is far more modern than the traditional Pyramid Spike and became popular around the turn of the millennium.

Best suited for:

• Sprint and hurdles events on synthetic tracks
• Middle distance events (up to 1500m) on synthetic tracks
• Field events (long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin) on synthetic tracks

The design of Christmas Tree Spike features a geometry of flat steps, rather than having a pointy tip. This means a larger surface area of the spike contacts the track, compared to the conical shape of Pyramid Spikes.

The Xmas Tree design has been touted by some manufacturers as being preferable to Pyramid Spikes. They claim that Christmas Tree Spikes will not pierce the track surface and will return more energy to the athlete. However, a scientific study found ‘the notion that compression spikes have less track penetration is unfounded.‘

That said, the same study found that the Xmas Tree design does provide larger energy returns than other spike designs, such as Pyramid Spikes. But the difference in energy return compared to other spike styles ‘was relatively small.‘

Whether an athlete prefers Christmas Tree Spikes or Pyramid Spikes is generally a personal preference.

Athletes competing in long distance or steeplechase events generally prefer Pyramid Spikes over Xmas Tree Spikes. For other events (sprints, middle distance and jumps) whether an athlete prefers Christmas Tree Spikes or Pyramid Spikes is a personal preference.
