Here Comes the Mud: Cross Country Spike Tips Every Athlete Should Know

There’s cross country… and then there’s real cross country.

The kind where shoes gain what feels like half a kilo of mud every lap.
Where hills and turns become skating rinks.
Where athletes finish races looking like they’ve survived battle.

And while the right spike length matters, experienced cross country runners also know a few tricks for surviving muddy conditions.

How to Stop Mud Clumping on Your Spikes

One of the biggest problems in muddy races is mud building up underneath your shoes.

The heavier the mud becomes:

  • the more energy you waste,
  • the less grip you get,
  • and the harder it becomes to lift your feet efficiently.

The Olive Oil Trick (Yes, Really)

Some athletes lightly spray or wipe the outsole of their shoes with a hydrophobic substance:

  • olive oil,
  • beeswax,
  • vaseline,
  • silicone spray,
  • or non-stick cooking spray.

The idea is to make it harder for wet mud to stick to the plate and gaps between spikes.

Does it work?

Sometimes — particularly in sticky clay-style mud — but usually only for part of the race. Heavy conditions will eventually overpower almost anything.

Important:

  • Use only a light coating.
  • Avoid getting anything on the upper or inside of the shoe.
  • Test it in training first.
  • Some athletes prefer silicone spray because it lasts longer and is less messy.

A little electrical tape can go a long way to ensuring shoes don’t slide off your foot in quagmire conditions. Once you’re all laced up a couple of loops of tape help ensure that your shoes remain steadily on your feet.

Longer spikes help the shoe penetrate through soft mud instead of skating across the surface.

General guide:

  • 9mm → most Australian XC courses
  • 12mm → soft and wet conditions
  • 15mm → deep mud and championship-level slop

Tighten Your Spikes Properly

Loose spikes collect more dirt and can become impossible to remove later.

Before racing:

  • Check every spike is tight
  • Replace worn spikes
  • Bring spare spikes to major events

Throwing muddy shoes into the bag and forgetting about them until next week.

Mud and moisture can:

  • rust spikes,
  • damage spike threads,
  • destroy shoe uppers,

The Best Way to Clean Cross Country Spikes

Step 1: Rinse Immediately

Use cold water to remove mud before it dries solid.

Avoid blasting shoes with high-pressure hot water.

Step 2: Remove the Spikes

If there the course has rocks or stones, on it or involves crossing concrete or asphalt paths, its not uncommon for spikes to bend, even at right angles.

This is where having a proper spike tool matters, and when you might even need a pair of pliers.

Removing spikes after a race:

  • helps the shoes dry properly,
  • prevents rust,
  • and makes future replacements much easier.
